North Midlands Under-16s were edged out 15-12 by Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire in the first of two Super Sunday tournaments staged at Denstone College in Staffordshire this afternoon.

North Midlands, fresh from a victory over Warwickshire in their opening game, led 7-5 at the interval after a try from centre Ryan Millar (King Edward's Birmingham and Greater Birmingham) was converted by fly-half Tom Sharwood (Bishop Perowne School and Worcestershire).

Millar's try stemmed from a turnover made by prop Rob Higgins (Church Stretton School and Shropshire) and cancelled out NL&D's early five points lead.

North Midlands went 12-5 up when winger Alex Rumsey (Minster School and Herefordshire) scored an unconverted try early in the second half, but NL&D rallied strongly.

The Three Counties levelled the scores with a converted try and snatched victory with a late penalty.

North Midlands were well led by captain and number eight Daniel Young (Bromsgrove School and Worcestershire) and his back-row colleague Matt Masters (Idsall School and Shropshire) also made a telling contribution before he was forced out of the game at half time by a dead leg injury.

North Midlands play their next match against East Midlands in the second Super Sunday tournament which will be staged at Broadstreet RFC near Coventry on November 15 (11am).
