North Midlands Under-16s made a winning start to their four match county programme by beating Warwickshire 18-6 in an entertaining opening game at Broadstreet RFC near Coventry this evening.
North Midlands made a flying start when left winger Jack Bruten (Kingstone HS and Herefordshire) crossed from a flowing move after just two minutes, but they turned around a point adrift at the break after Warwickshire responded with two penalty goals.
North Midlands regained the lead with a penalty from fly-half Tom Sharwood (Bishop Perowne School and Worcestershire) and took a grip on the game when replacement winger Alex Rumsey (Minster College and Herefordshire) crossed shortly after a lengthy stoppage for treatment to Tom Foster (Oldbury Wells School and Worcestershire) who suffered a suspected neck injury. The North Midlands hooker was later taken to hospital.
Replacement lock Jake Hayden-Wright from Worcestershire sealed North Midlands' win when he went over from close range just before the end.
North Midlands were forced into a late reshuffle when replacement Sam Waltier was forced to withdraw because of illness. But Greater Birmingham's Robert George proved a more than adequate replacement and he had half a game after an injury to Andrew Smith.
North Midlands' next game at this age group is against Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire at the first of two Super Sunday tournaments involving all six Midlands counties at Denstone College in Staffordshire on November 1.
